Pyry Paunio

Pyry Paunio (born 2002) is studying piano and composition at the Espoo Music Institute as a student of Rebekka Angervo, Niklas Pokki and Riikka Talvitie. He has performed at numerous concerts at the Espoo Music Institute, the Sibelius Academy and the Finnish Chopin Association, and he plays on the Romantiikan Sankareita CD (2012). He performed his piano composition “Petite Étude Polyrythmique” at his concert at the PianoEspoo Festival in the fall of 2017. In December 2018, he passed the piano C-level diploma with excellent honours. Pyry has studied at the Youth Piano Academy since November 2018.

Pyry has participated in master classes led by Erik T. Tawaststjerna, Professor Hui-Ying Liu-Tawaststjerna, Denis Pascal, Krszystof Jablonski and Konstantin Bogino. He was awarded at the International Praeludium Crescere con la Musica Competition in Italy in May 2011, the Tapiola Piano Competition in Espoo in 2015 and 2017, the Juvenalia National Chamber Music Competition together with violinist Ingrid Odé and cellist Evert Odé in spring 2017 and the Steinway Piano Festival in spring 2018 in Helsinki. In the autumn of 2018, Pyry participated in the Helsinki Lied Competition with baritone Miiro Savola.

In January 2014, Pyry participated in the Finnish National Opera, Sibelius Academy and Radio Symphony Orchestra’s “Hear This, I’m a Composer” project, and his composition “Aallokon Syvyys” premiered at Almin Hall in 2014. Pyry’s composition for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, “Crossing the River”, was premiered at the Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall in New York in 2016. The Finnish premiere was in Tapiola Hall, performed by the Tapiola Youth Symphony Orchestra.
